Çatalhöyük does not offer the instant vertical drama of a temple or theatre. Its radical idea is horizontal and domestic: houses attached without streets, roofs used for movement, rooms repeatedly rebuilt over the remains of earlier lives.
What to look for
Treat plaster, hearths, platforms and thresholds as architecture. The site asks how storage, cooking, burial and image-making could occupy the same compact interior without our modern divisions between private, sacred and public.
The right rhythm
See the visitor centre before the excavation shelters. The model provides scale; the surviving layers then stop looking modest and begin to behave like a city.
A place becomes more compelling when the easy explanation runs out.
