Balkan Naci İslimyeli’s practice is useful when the clean distinction between image and text stops being useful. Painting becomes theatre, photography behaves like evidence, the body appears as trace, and language enters the frame only to make meaning less stable.
The self as material
Portraiture here is rarely a promise of recognition. Faces, silhouettes and garments become sites where private memory meets public role. The image asks not “Who is this?” but “How is a self assembled, performed and lost?”
A literature of objects
Scissors, mirrors, fabric and found forms behave like recurring words. Their repetition creates an archive that is emotional rather than chronological—an art history organised by return.
The room completes the work
Installation matters because viewing becomes physical. We move around absence, catch ourselves in reflection and discover that our shadow has entered the composition without permission.
